Marketing: It’s all about knowing your customers

We all are trying to market to a specific group of people, but how well do you really know your customers? The more you know them, the more you’ll be able to market towards their specific interests and needs. Advertising has gotten significantly better over the years with companies like Google stealing personal information to offer more targeted advertisements. But Facebook is about to make a lot more money through new marketing efforts and a program called Atlas.

Atlas announced at advertising conference

Facebook announced a new program called Atlas that will track and store all the information it needs in Facebook’s personal database to help determine which ads are most effective. It is pretty surprising how much personal information Facebook has about you and shares with its affiliates to provide you with the best advertisements possible. According to CBS News, it is pretty much the same thing as the NSA database which stores mass amounts of information on everyone in the country by tracking their online habits.

Though some people get angry about having their online habits tracked and personalized advertisements, many people kind of like getting ads for things they are actually looking for rather than something that doesn’t interest them at all. For example, a girl looking for a wedding dress might rather enjoy seeing ads for wedding dress companies on the side of her Facebook while someone who is in college probably isn’t going to be interested in buying Depends. By storing personal data, Atlas can tell exactly what a person wants or needs at the moment and can target all ads accordingly.

Marketing towards your customers

Maybe you don’t have the access to an Atlas-type system like Facebook does, and maybe you won’t know exactly what your customers are always doing, but that doesn’t mean you can’t try to better understand them and market more specifically towards them. One thing that is really important is communicating with your customers in a way that they best understand. For example, if your target audience is children, then you will need to communicate in a way that they and their parents will see at the same time.
